Sunday, November 24 from 11 AM until 3:30 PM
Level: Beginner, min 4, max. 8 participants
Cost: $120 per person, includes refreshments and bread tastings, hands-on instructions and all materials
Location: Brot Bakehouse School and Kitchen, 38 Meade Rd., Fairfax, Vermont
Learn the fundamentals of baking with a natural starter culture: proper mixing, fermenting, shaping and baking. We talk about what makes these breads different from something that's made with commercial yeast and you will learn about starting and maintaining a live bread culture (sourdough).
We also talk about the history of natural bread making, types of grains used for bread, different types of flour and nutritional benefits of baking with sourdough.
Making completely natural bread with your own sourdough may take some planning, but it does not have to be complicated - you don't even need a mixer, it's all made by hand!
The class is designed as an introduction to sourdough baking techniques and you will not only learn all you need to start bread making at home, but also how to make other delicious baked goods with sourdough, like biscuits, cakes and brownies. Finally you learn how to start and 'feed' a sourdough culture and get a ripe starter to take home, so you can start making bread right away!
Come curious and leave inspired by wild yeasts and their magic!
